To Catch a Cheater

SCENE OPENS inside a car. Joe sits behind the wheel, has just hit the brakes and put on his flashers. His wedding ring gleams as his left hand drapes over the window. He turns, soft-eyed, toward his wife. Vanessa is in the passenger seat, flipping down the visor so she can fix her lipstick in the mirror. She catches his look and gives him a quick smile. He offers to drive her the last few blocks. She laughs, light and sweet, and tells him not to bother, he’s got work waiting. Besides, she isn’t sure how long the meeting will run, so he shouldn’t wait up; maybe he should go out with the guys. Joe frowns, reminding her their son Danny is coming for dinner. Vanessa gasps, says she hates missing him again. Joe sighs, says it’s fine. He leans in for a goodbye kiss, but she’s already stepping out, closing the door like she didn’t notice. The car pulls away. From the curb we watch her turn, give one last glance back, then start toward the camera, calm, elegant. Her hand lifts, slides the wedding band off her finger and tucks it away. She walks up to a house, rings the bell. A teenage guy answers. She gives him a slow once-over and says, "You must be Danny," then brushes past him without waiting. Inside, he snaps a quick picture on his phone, bragging that his buddies would never believe he pulled someone this hot. She asks if he’s legal. He says yes, offers to show ID. She says she believes him. Vanessa glances around the place, comments it’s nice. He says he rents it with roommates who are out. She tells him not to bother with names—they’re here to fuck and that’s it. They move into his bedroom. She shoves him onto the bed, kicks off her heels. He asks if she’s done the dating-site thing before. He hasn’t, but his buddy scored with a married woman. He wonders if she’s married. She says it’s complicated. He worries about her husband. She shrugs; a few secrets keep a marriage alive. Danny corrects her: secrets keep HER happy. She rolls her eyes, asks why he cares—he’s the one about to bang a married woman. Either he fucks her or he doesn’t. He strips off his shirt, tells her he’s going to fuck her, and she freezes. A photo on his shelf shows Danny and Joe together. Everything clicks. She panics, tries to explain it isn’t what he thinks. He says he’ll send the picture to his dad and let him see what a whore he married. She offers anything to stop him. He tells her she’s pathetic but she better get on her knees and suck him off if she wants that photo to stay buried. Vanessa sinks down, the cougar suddenly the prey.
